Call for Proposals
We would like to invite you to submit a proposal for the 42nd Annual Conference of the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) that will take place in Cyprus from September 29th to Oct 3rd, 2010).  IVLA 2010 is an excellent opportunity for scholars and researchers, teachers and students, artists, and other professionals with interests and activities relating to the multi-disciplinary field of Visual Literacy, to present their work and constructively interact with peers.
Papers are invited for IVLA 2010 on topics lying within the scope of the conference. All contributions must be original, should not be published elsewhere and should not be intended to be published elsewhere during the review period. Paper presentations, symposia and panel sessions, roundtable discussions, workshops and demonstrations, poster sessions, and visual exhibits are invited.

Conference Session Formats
·        Paper Presentation (25 or 50 minutes): A 20-minute presentation or a 45-minute presentation, followed by 5 minutes for questions, comments, and discussion.
·        Roundtable (50 minutes): Roundtable presenters facilitate and engage in a structured discussion with participants. All attendees have an opportunity to comment, question, or respond.
·        Symposium (50 minutes): Symposia examine one topic in depth, preferably from different theoretical or methodological perspectives. These sessions are introduced and guided by a chairperson, involve up to four 10-minute presentations, followed by the presentation of one discussant. Symposia are organized by a maximum of two organizers; one of them can also act as chairperson, but they cannot act as discussants.
·        Panel Session (50 minutes): Discussion panels are for one specific issue by a group of practitioners, and/or researchers. They are guided by a chairperson, involving three to five panelists with different positions on the topic.
·        Workshop/Demonstration (1-2 hours): A hands-on, interactive opportunity for professional development in a teaching and learning topic or a relevant method.
·        Poster (50 minutes): Posters will be on display for the entire poster session period. Presenters need only be present for one (scheduled) time during the poster session period. Notice of the time will be included in the poster display.
·        Installation/Art Show (1-2 hours): Art show acceptance and space are very limited. Please specify the medium (e.g., paintings, digital displays, sculpture, etc.). Tables and floor space can be provided at the venue. Presenters are responsible to arrange for display easels, pedestals, electronic equipment, etc. (If the display involves sound, please provide headphones as part of the display.) Please feel free to discuss your ideas with the conference planning team prior to proposal submission.
N.B. With the exception of symposia, all other session formats can be considered for the teacher session.
Types of Delivery
All aforementioned session formats can be selected as on-site (conference venue), or on-line (virtual) presentations.
Authors, whose virtual proposal has been accepted, will need to further submit the following material in PDF format by September 3rd :
·        A Power Point slideshow (6 slides) with a short narrative/script accompanying each slide, or a Podcast/Vodcast with a brief presentation of your paper,
·        The final draft of their paper, and
·        A handout with a list of specific questions/issues for discussion with the audience.
Accepted virtual presentations will be on permanent display in a designated conference area (on-site). They will also be posted to our Blackboard-supported online platform. Both on-site and on-line conference participants will have access to these presentations and their material, and may communicate electronically with the virtual presenters throughout the IVLA 2010 conference. Please note that virtual presentations will take place a-synchronously (i.e., not on the same time). Several sessions for synchronous presentation can be also organized.
Proposal Submission
Paper, Roundtable, Poster, Installation, and Workshop
Proposals should be submitted as a long abstract (600 to 1000 words), which will be assessed via a peer-review process. These proposals should be presented as follows:

·        Provide the presentation type (on-site or on-line).
·        Indicate whether your proposal should be considered for the teacher session.
·        Provide the presentation title.
·        List all presenters, including all names, titles, organization/institutional affiliation, contact information, and whether or not a member of IVLA. Please designate which presenter is the key contact.
·        If you are a SIGTE member, please identify yourself!
·        Include a 50 to 60 word abstract suitable for inclusion in the conference program. Be sure to include the purpose, session outcome, intended audience, and the type of presentation proposed (i.e., paper, roundtable, poster, installation, workshop).
·        Indicate whether you would consider presenting in another format than the one you requested.
·        Include no more than 3 relevant keywords describing your work.
·        Indicate the media to be used. Computer (PC), data projectors and screens will be provided. Fast network infrastructure is also provided. All other equipment should be supplied by presenters, unless they inform the organizers ahead of time.

·        Provide a minimum of 600 to a maximum of 1000 words anonymous description, including:

Use this page if you are submitting to teacher session.
·        Provide the presentation type (on-site or on-line).
·        Provide the presentation title.
·        Indicate the requested presentation type and duration. Short, creative sessions preferred. The half-day session will be a series of these sessions, so they need to be engaging.
·        Provide a summary of 600-1000 words detailing the specific visual literacy topic. The summary must include how the topic relates to K-12 curriculum standards, what teachers in the sessions will be doing (active, hands-on sessions preferred), and what teachers will take away from the session (handouts, products they have created, lesson plans, rubrics, visual literacy resources, etc.). Please indicate the grade range most appropriate for your topic (e.g., K-12, elementary, middle, high school).
·        Panel sessions are invited (3-4 people showcasing best practices, projects that work in the classroom, strategies to integrate visual literacy in the curriculum, etc.). For information regarding panel proposals, see section B below.

·        List all presenters and the chairperson, including all names, titles, organization/institutional affiliation, contact information, and whether or not a member of IVLA. Please designate which presenter is the key contact.
·        If you are a SIGTE member, please identify yourself!
·        Include a 100 to 150 word abstract suitable for inclusion in the conference program. The abstract should provide information regarding the aims of the panel and its scientific and/or educational relevance. Be sure to include the session outcome and intended audience.
·        Include a 100-300 word abstract for each individual position. The purpose of this abstract is to describe the position of each panel participant and must illustrate the diversity of positions with respect to the central issue.
·        Include no more than 3 relevant keywords describing your work.
·        Indicate the media to be used. Computer (PC), data projectors and screens will be provided. Fast network infrastructure is also provided. All other equipment should be supplied by presenters, unless they inform the organizers ahead of time.
Symposium Proposal
·        Provide the presentation type (on-site or on-line).
·        Provide the presentation title and the title of each individual presentation.
·        List all presenters, the chairperson, and the discussant. Include all names, titles, organization/institutional affiliation, contact information, and whether or not a member of IVLA. Please designate the chairperson as the key contact.
·        Include a 100 to 150 word abstract suitable for inclusion in the conference program. The abstract should provide information regarding the aims of the panel and its scientific and/or educational relevance. Be sure to include the session outcome, and intended audience.
·        For each individual presentation include (1) a 50 to 60 word abstract, and (2) an extended summary of 600-1,000 words, detailing the aims, methodology/research design, findings, and theoretical and educational significance of the research.
·        Include no more than 3 relevant keywords describing your work.
·        Indicate the media to be used. Computer (PC), data projectors and screens will be provided. Fast network infrastructure is also provided. All other equipment should be supplied by presenters, unless they inform the organizers ahead of time.

Highlights
·        Papers presented at IVLA2010 (on-site, and on-line) are eligible to be considered for publication in IVLA’s refereed collection of Selected Readings (to be published in March 2011); submission deadline for the Selected Readings is November 3rd, 2010.
·        Papers accepted for publication in the Selected Readings, will be considered for the Editors’ Award, and the Braden and Beauchamp Visual Literacy Award.
